No Exit New Music Presents a Tribute to Czech-American Composer Ladislav Kubik

Mon 4/15 @ 8PM

Fri 4/19 @ 7PM

Sat 4/20 @ 8PM

As its 10th season comes to an end, No Exit No Music continues to give Clevelanders the opportunity to hear performances of contemporary music that otherwise wouldn’t be on local concert programs. Its next series of concerts showcases the music of Czech-American composer Ladislav Kubik, whose music has been compared to that of Polish composers Witold Lutoslawski and Krzysztof Penderecki.

The program includes the world premiere of Noctures, which was commissioned by No Exit and turned out to the last piece Kubik composed before his death in 2017.

“We had planned on doing this series with Ladislav present, envisioning a living retrospective of his extraordinary body of work,” says No Exit artistic director Timothy Beyer. “That he passed before that could occur is heartbreaking, but nonetheless, this a celebration of one of our era’s truly great composers and his indelible musical legacy.”

The programs also feature Kubik’s 1979 Duo Concertante, his 1995 Elegy in Two Movements, Metamorphoses from 2003 and Sonata (1978).

The group performs at Cleveland State’s Drinko Hall on Mon 4/15, which will be live streamed. They’ll perform at Heights Arts on Fri 4/19 and SPACES on Sat 4/20. All performances are free.
