Family-Friendly Put-in-Bay Music Festival Returns for Its Second Year

Sat 6/9 @ 11AM

If weekends on Put-in-Bay evoke for you a scene of nonstop drunken revelry, think again. While weekdays are laid-back bucolic bliss (try it some time!), there’s another reason to bring the whole family over for a Saturday trip: the Put-in-Bay music festival, now in its second year.

Taking place on the lawn by Perry’s Memorial — a tribute to the 1812 Battle of the Great Lakes — the fest kicks off at 11am with bands starting at noon. Swingmania is first up, followed by School of Rock, the Reese Dailey Band, Hillbilly Csino, Groovement, and the Lowdown Brass Band. Emcee for the day is island regular Bob Gatewood, who will close the festival with “Friends of the Bay.” Two workshops will also take place: a drumming workshop by Bob Hyer of the Central Ohio Symphony from 11:30am-1pm and ukulele session hosted by islander Dick McCarthy from 1-3pm, with the ukulele players getting to play on the big stage about 3:30pm.

Between acts, three members of the Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial Rangers will perform sea shanties on a side stage. There’s even a Guitar Hero contest in the workshop tent, starting at 11:30am. You won’t have time to get bored — promise!

Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and just enjoy the day. Food, local wines, beer and soft drinks will be available right at the festival. The festival’s free and ferry tickets on the sponsoring Miller Boat Line won’t set you back much. If you’re looking for other things to do, the South Bass Island Kayak Rendezvous & South Bass Island Lighthouse tours are also taking place that day.
