Forward

Follow the signs. Or go your own way.

David Bowie epitomized forward momentum. His Berlin Era of the late ’70’s was an artistic leap forward and produced some of his best music (i.e. the song “Heroes”). We’re mounting 2 shows at BOP STOP next week: on Fri 1/12, we explore his iconic Berlin Era, and on Sat 1/13, we reveal his entire life and musical career, both shows complete with rare video, needle drops and live music from Vanity Crash. Tix are selling fast.

Free music at the Grog, an ambitious Angels at Ensemble, and readings on death at Brews + Prose. The Cowslingers are back in full regalia, while Tailspinner hosts mask- and puppet-making workshops in Gordon Square. You’re running out of time to see The Jazz Age at CMA. While it’s never easy to speak out against injustice, the Maltz puts up big bucks to encourage kids to Stop The Hate. Pay it forward. –Thomas Mulready

The Cowslingers are back! The Cleveland punkabilly quartet had a great run from 1990-2003, cranking out records and touring extensively before guitarist Bobby Latina retired from touring (and joined the Jack Fords) and the other members morphed into the Whiskey Daredevils.

Now Latina is back in the fold, and the original lineup has recorded Real Big Rooster, which they’ll launch with a Beachland Tavern Show. John Benson talks to vocalist Greg Miller to learn what brought the ‘slingers back to life. Fri 1/5.

David Bowie’s Berlin Era has fascinated critics and fans for decades: riding high on the success of Young Americans, the artist hooks up with fellow addict Iggy Pop and relocates to Berlin to get clean (improbably, it works) and create some of the most acclaimed music of his storied career, the albums Low, “Heroes” and Lodger. CoolCleveland’s cultural impresario Thomas Mulready returns on Fri 1/12 with a in-depth and entertaining peek behind the scenes, David Bowie: The Berlin Era, informed by recently released and rare box sets, video and needle drops. Tickets.

The following evening, Sat 1/13, the audience is treated to Bowie’s entire fascinating life, An Evening With(out) David Bowie, in two parts, at 7:30PM and 9:30PM- see both for a discount. Each evening is punctuated with a blistering live set or two by Cleveland’s glam heroes, Vanity Crash, showcasing their 2017 release, Phantasmagoria, featuring pianist Mike Garson, Bowie’s longtime accompanist, alongside Bowie favorites and period classics. This show sells out, so secure your seat now. Tix.

Talespinner Children’s Theatre debuted six years ago to bring professional children’s theater to Cleveland. But its productions are multi-disciplinary, multi-sensory, interactive experiences that go far beyond merely staging a “kids play.”

TCT founder Alison Garrigan has steadily expanded her skills in mask- and puppet-making, two elements that make this theater distinctive and special. Some of her work goes on view at the Gordon Square Art Space Fri 1/5 where TCT will be holding free workshops on Saturdays throughout January to introduce visitors of all ages to their approach to theater.

“What’s quite fascinating is that regardless of the century, country, race or gender born into, the truly magnificent leaders – the titans who changed the landscape of their industry, often creating it or re-inventing it all together – share some very similar characteristics,” writes our business columnist Alex Sukhoy.

She points out that you’ll find startlingly similar traits in John D. Rockefeller and Jennifer Lopez. What are those traits? Read on – she’ll tell you!

Britt Seward’s son is having a blast in Early Childhood at The Music Settlement. “He loves it here. I love the variety they have here… Music and drama, play and science.”

Britt was concerned about tuition for high quality programs but the administrative staff helped her overcome those challenges. “Come visit! It’s warm, welcoming, the children are happy. And if you’re concerned about the price tag, don’t let that be a concern. Talk to them!” Britt said.

TMS Preschool, Day School, & Kindergarten Open Houses throughout January. For more info, visit http://ec.TheMusicSettlement.org.

These days it often seems as if bigotry, bullying and personal attacks are the secret to success in the U.S., setting a terrible example for kids. But the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage encourages kids to embrace more generous ideals with its annual Stop the Hate essay contest for grades 6-12. The deadline for grades 6-10 is Fri 1/5; for grades 11 and 12, it’s Fri 1/19.
