London’s Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment doesn’t do things by the book. When they came together 34 years ago, their mission was to look at period music, primarily from the late 18th century, in a new way. Instead of an autocratic music director/conductor, the group is self-governed, creating their musical vision as a democratic ensemble.

“We’re not trying to recreate the past,” says double bassist Cecelia Bruggemeyer. “We’re trying to create something that’s exciting now, using historic information.”

The group is leaving its home at London’s Southbank Centre for a mere pair of shows in the U.S.: one at Lincoln Center, and one right here in northeast Ohio at Oberlin’s Finney Chapel. The program includes three Italian Baroque works: Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria and Tomaso Albinoni’s Oboe Concerto No. 2, performed by a 16-voice choir, countertenor Iestyn Davies (pictured) and baroque oboe player Katharina Spreckelsen.

Tickets are $35, $10 for students. Call 800-371-0178 or go to oberlin.edu/artsguide.
