Claudia Rankine’s “Citizen” Inspires Workshops at the Cleveland Public Library Carnegie Branch

As part of its Black History Month programming, the Cleveland Public Library is offering is offering a two-part workshop called “The Personal Is Political.” It will center on groundbreaking poet/author Claudia Rankine’s 2014 book-length poem, Citizen: An American Lyric, the 2019 Big Read selection. Its seven chapters comment on public and private incidents and their meaning, with an emphasis on societal and personal racism.

In the workshops, participants will write about their own experiences with social equity, to be shared with and discussed by the group “in a supportive atmosphere.” The workshops, taking place at the Carnegie West Branch of CPL, are free and open to all.
