MANSFIELD: Raising the Age of Consent

On the heels of the airing of the Lifetime three-part series Surviving R. Kelly, which documents the evil deeds perpetrated on young women and mere girls by this sadistic scumbag/pervert, who should be behind bars, a video of Drake also surfaced on him onstage kissing and once fondling the breast of a young woman that answered “17” when he asked her age after the fact, clearly something that he should have done beforehand.

In spite of the fact Drake (who was much younger when the video was shot) was shocked, jumped back, and said, “I can’t go to jail, man!” when the girl announced her age, uptight social critic Marlow Stern, who writes for the Daily Beast, got his panties all in a bunch trying to conflate the very dissimilar behaviors of the two artists. But hey, it’s a sign of the times.

Other writers have come up with similarly lurid tales of other musicians, from Prince to David Bowie to Ted Nugent to Chuck Berry to Bill Wyman to Marvin Gaye, all the way back to 1953 when Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13-year-old cousin, having their way with underage females merely to tweak the prurient clickbait interest of Internet surfers. Some of these so-called journalists are damn near as guilty as the musicians they point accusing fingers at in regards to using the young females for disgusting purposes.

One surefire way to curtail grown men from taking advantage of females under the age of consent is for parents to do a better job of raising their boys into men. The other side of that two-sided coin is for parents to do a better job of raising their girls into women.

Oh, shut up! You know I’m right.

However, when self-professed moralists (yeah, I’m talking about the evangelicals of the religious right) don’t have a problem with voting to put a man in the White House that brags about grabbing women by “their pussies” how in heaven’s name can any parent hope to do a better job of inculcating values of morality into their progeny when the national discourse has sunk to such levels? Oh, I know, it’s “Do as I say, not do as I do.”

Since we have little chance of curtailing the activities of musicians (and other men who have a predilection for underage women), why don’t we raise the age of consent, say, to age 21? After all, 18 seems like a number plucked out of the air anyway.

The assumption, I guess, is that by the age of 18 young people will have matured enough to make wise and informed decisions about their bodies. Really? There’s far too much evidence and far too many broken women extant that proves otherwise.

But if 18 is the age we don’t mind throwing females to the wolves (and obviously we don’t), by raising the age of consent to 21, the wolves will eventually come to believe that 18 is the prime age they should be pouncing on women at, instead of age 15 or 16. Does that make sense?

If it doesn’t make sense, not to worry, since little of what transpires in the world of sexuality makes sense these days, now does it?
