Israeli musician Avi Avital is a rare bird: he’s a mandolin player who performs classical music. Since the classical mandolin repertoire is limited, he’s had nearly 100 pieces written for him and he’s re-arranged many other pieces for his instrument.
Omer Avital is also Israeli-born although he has lived in the U.S. since 1992 when he was 21. His instrument is the acoustic bass and he’s played it in the sorts of settings you’d expect to find stand-up acoustic bass, primarily jazz. But he’s also made forays into classical music, blues, funk, pop, Arabic music, traditional Israeli music and Yemenite music. He’s released nearly a dozen albums as a bandleader, and collaborated or performed as a sideman on many others.
The two musicians will perform together at the Cleveland Museum of Art in “Avital meets Avital.” They’ll be supported by pianist Yonathan Avishai and percussionist Itamar Doari on percussion, as they bring together classical music, jazz and diverse folk traditions.
