Three Short Plays at CPT Explore Aspects of Black Love

Fri 5/21 @ 7PM

Cleveland Public Theatre is known for “showing its work,” that is, sharing the process by which an idea becomes a fully staged production with its audiences, giving them a deeper understanding of how theater develops.

This weekend, it’ll present An Extraordinary Love, three short plays in progress directed by active local actor/musician/director/educator Nicole Sumlin, united by their exploration of what love means in Black culture. There’s a good chance you’ll see several versions of them in the future.

“For generations, Black love and relationships have pressed through amazing obstacles to soothe, nourish, and bloom,” they say. “Many entities outside of Black culture have tried to name what this love is and what it’s not. In the context of three 10-minute plays presented as readings on Zoom, Black artists authentically explore this extraordinary love, with extended post-show discussions to unpack its beauty.”

These plays include Ananias J. Dixon’s The Proposal, Lisa Langford’s Smoking and Christian St. Croix’s Tiana. Featured actors are Katrice Headd, Christina Johnson, LaShawn M. Little, Darryl Tatum, Sherrie Tolliver and Anthony Woods.

Tickets are $1 with a donation of $1-$99. Buy your tickets here. You’ll get the Zoom link shortly before “curtain” time.
