SUMMARY:Third Friday at 78th Street Features Openings and Last Chances to S
 ee Shows
DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_171173" align="alignnone" width="650"]
 Work by Garrett Weider[/caption]\nFri 2/20 @ 5-9PM\nIt’s always a little
slower at 78th Street Studios’ Third Friday this time of year\, but tha
t’s a good reason to go. You’ll have more space to browse the gallerie
s\, shops and artist studios\, and more time to chat with the artists and
learn more about their work.\nThere’s a new show to check out at HEDGE G
allery this month. Natural Phenomena features work by three area artists:
two painters and a ceramicist. Christopher Kier\, who came to this area fr
 om Toronto\, is inspired by ruins\, relics\, and totemic objects\, while S
usan Squires\, whose work recently appeared in a show at Context Gallery\,
upstairs from HEDGE\, has been working in encaustic for the last couple o
f decades\, creating mixed-media geometric abstractions. And Lauren Herzak
 - Bauman creates layered ceramic and porcelain works\, that absorb other m
aterials including fabric\, inspired by such natural phenomena as moving w
ater\, rock striations\, and star clusters.\nIt’s the last chance to cat
ch the show Power Exchange Rate at Understory\, an installation and sculpt
ure-heavy show that explores what queer and feminist love and desire look
like under capitalism. On the way there (it’s at the fair back of the RA
MP level)\, stop at Garrett Weider’s studio and check out the new mushro
om paintings he’s been doing or his popular Van Gogh ears. There’ll al
so be vendors from North Coast Promotions on the RAMP level as well as the
first floor ArtSpace.\nAlso closing this month is Sean Wheeler’s show i
n the second floor Suite 215 gallery. And the Kenneth Paul Lesko Gallery\,
also on the second floor\, has extended the show by The Birds by Australi
an artist Aubrey Rhodes for another month. There’s always plenty to do a
nd see on Third Friday. It’s free and open at all including well-behaved
  children and pets!\n78thstreetstudios.com\n[mappress mapid="140"]
