SUMMARY:Karamu Production "Jubilee" Tells the Story of a 150+-Year-Old Coll
 ege Gospel Group
DESCRIPTION:\nThu 3/26-Sun 4/19\nEven though it’s got a long\, four-week
run\, Karamu is warning that 50% of the tickets for its next production\,
Jubilee\, have already been sold.\nPlaywright/director Tazewell Thompson
’s 2024 play tells the story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers\, founded in 18
71 to raise money for the Nashville HBCU Fisk University\, which had been
founded just five years earlier. Many of its members were formerly enslave
d\, yet they touring internationally\, attracting acclaim and\, of course\
, threats. The vocal group still exists\, and is made up of today’s Fisk
students.\nObviously\, the soaring gospel music is a big part of the show
’s appeal: it features more than 40 African-American spirituals\, perfor
med a cappella\, letting the voices shine. Nathan Henry directs the Karamu
production\, with vocal arrangements by Dianne Adams McDowell.\nGet your
 tickets here —quickly.\n[mappress mapid="630"]
