SUMMARY:City Club Program Addresses "The State of the Great Lakes"
DESCRIPTION:\nThu 8/14 @ 11:30AM\nThe Great Lakes are one of this country
’s (and Canada’s) true treasures\, the largest group of freshwater lak
es in the world. And our own Lake Erie is the one most dependent on touris
m\, recreation\, boating and fishing for its economy. But being the shallo
 west\, it’s also the most threatened by pollution\, invasive species\, c
limate change\, overfishing\, and algae blooms which rendered Toledo’s w
ater unusable for three days in 2014.\nObviously then\, “The State of th
e Great Lakes” is a topic of huge importance in this region\, so it’s
fitting that the City Club has invited Chris Winslow\, director of OSU Sea
Grant’s college program\, to talk about it.\nWinslow coordinates resear
ch with OSU’s Stone Lab on Gibraltar Island off South Bass Island (you c
an take a water taxi from downtown Put-in-Bay and visit on certain days to
learn about their work). He works with researchers and scientists who are
looking for ways to protect the health of the lake’s ecosystem\; learn
about the critical work they do to avert threats to a healthy lake and whe
re we stand now that the federal government is threatening to defund that
work.\nThe talk will also be live steamed on the City Club’s website\, s
tarting at noon. You can text questions to 330-541-5794\nGet tickets here.
