BOOK REVIEW: “Brief Interludes” by Kelly Ferjutz, reviewed by Annie Hogsett

Kelly Ferjutz, a Cleveland author of many and varied talents and experiences — racing cars, really? Who knew? — has written a mind-boggling variety of things over the course of her career. Fiction. Nonfiction. Poetry. Plays. Reviews. Every sort of writing from romance to sports, including five published novels.

Her latest book, a collection of short stories, entitled Brief Interludes, draws from the multiplicity of genres she’s explored. Ferjutz hit the nail on the head with the title. Who doesn’t long for an interlude? A break, a recess, a rest, a respite or some breathing space? Ahh. This book is just what January in Cleveland ordered.

Got 10 spare minutes or 20? Browse the table of contents and choose your interlude, the story to fit the day or the mood. A young couple meets cute in a fish storm on the Shoreway. She’s the one driving the monster truck. Or how about a piano with a mind of its own that can make or break an artist’s career on a whim? A knight in armor at an orchestra concert? A quirky love story set in Medieval times brings together a wounded warrior and a blind girl in a tender tale about the healing power of kindness and love. No two of Ferjutz’s Interludes are alike. Her mysteries, puzzles, romances and comic encounters evolve from engaging introductions to rewarding resolutions. Nineteen brief escapes from which to choose. Seriously. Don’t we deserve a small getaway? It’s January. In Cleveland.

Brief Interludes, a collection of short stories, by Kelly Ferjutz is available through bookstores everywhere in either regular or large print versions, or as a Kindle e-book, from Amazon.com.
