Samuel Salsbury Plays North Indian Music at Kent’s Standing Rock Cultural Arts

Sat 6/23 @ 7:30PM

North Indian classical music is on tap in the next edition of Kent’s Standing Rock Cultural Arts Around the World music series. At SRCA’s North Water Street Gallery, Akron-based world musician Samuel Salsbury will perform on sarangi — a short-necked, 39-string instrument played with a bow that’s used in music of Northern India, Pakistan and Nepal — accompanied by Josh Sherman on tabla.

Salsbury has traveled extensively, absorbing music of various genres from around the world into his playing. This concert will feature pieces in the Hindustani tradition of North India, which Salsbury has been studying in India for several months for the past five years, including a full classical raga and two bhajans (devotional songs).

After the concert, he’ll talk about his visits to India and show photos from his trips. There will also be Indian food from Namaste Cuisine. It’s a $10 suggested donation or pay what you can. The evening starts with a meet-and-greet with light food and drink at 7:30, followed by the performance at 8pm.
