During the time he spent in Cleveland (he came from Pittsburgh and Columbus and currently lives in Maine) Jay Brown’s concert photography captured the 90s underground rock scene better than almost anyone’s. He photographed bands like Nirvana, Sonic Youth and Pavement, and captured White Stripes and Black Keys before they were anything. He documented the punk/indie scene at Pat’s in the Flats extensively with an eye for the moment of peak excitement.
Shawn Mishak also photographed local music in underground clubs, including the legendary DIY venue Speak in Tongues. He’s also done point-and-shoot photography.
The two have an exhibit currently running at Doubting Thomas in Tremont, called Murder in Cleveland. It also includes a video installation of both local and touring bands performing in Cleveland from 2000-2018. You’ve got one last chance to catch it this weekend during its closing reception. There will be live music, of course. It’s free and open at all.
