Unlike some in high places, many of us recognize the added value of welcoming immigrants and refugees to our community. They bring new languages, new customs and new ideas which refresh a culture that may have become too complacent and staid. They bring an entrepreneurial attitude, a strong work ethic and a tolerance for risk, as shown by their willingness to uproot to an alien (and often hostile) new area. And they bring the added population that areas like Cleveland so badly need, with its concomitant increase in economic activity.
The Cleveland Museum of Art honors all the good that immigrants, past and present, bring on CMA International Day, giving everyone a chance to celebrate their own family immigrant story. The free event takes place all day in the Ames Family Atrium and Gartner Auditorium. It starts with a naturalization ceremony in the Gartner Auditorium at 11am, wth dozens of immigrants taking the oath of citizenship. That’s followed by a showcase with music, dance, theater and spoken word performances from multiple cultures going on in the Gartner Auditorium the rest of the afternoon.
Also throughout the day, the Atrium will be set up as the Global Village Square, with displays, demonstrations and activities from a variety of community groups, a CMA open studio with artist Wendy Mahon creating wearable art inspired by the museum’s collection, and community conversations hosted by Global Cleveland.
There’ll also be short films in Morley Lecture all, including an international kid’s film festival from 1:30-2:45pm, and a short film about the history of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens at 1:20 and 2:45, plus gallery talks looking at some of the international art in the museum’s collection.
