Juneteenth is an independence-day holiday celebrated in the African-American community to commemorate emancipation from slavery. Specifically it’s the day in 1865 when the state of Texas announced the abolition of slavery.
The East Cleveland Library is honoring Juneteenth with a weekend of activities. On Fri 6/14 @ 3pm, a community forum called “400 Years — Let’s Talk — How Do We Heal?” takes place in the library auditorium followed by a reception offering food from the African diaspora.
On Saturday at noon, there’ll be a Juneteenth Commemoration Community Cookout in Pattison Park with a vendor marketplace, children’s village, live entertainment, including a theatrical production, and free food and giveaways.
And on Sunday, the Festival of Art’s Tribute to Our Heroes and Sheroes takes place at Bristol Manor 14035 Euclid Avenue. A tribute dinner starting at 3pm will honor entrepreneur Mr. Charlie Bibb, educator/community leader Dr. Paul Hill, artist Dr. Edward Parker, author/poet/environmentalist Ms. Jacqueline Gillon, author/retired Director of Parks and Recreation City of East Cleveland Mrs Carolyn Cockfield, and poet/radio hostess and founder of the Distinguished Gentlemen Of Spoken Word Ms. Honey Bell Bey. There’ll be special guests and live performances, as well as vendors selling their handmade art. Tickets are $20 for adults, $5 for children, with the talent showcase starting at 6pm.
