Annual Memorial Service Honors Homeless Individuals and Friends Who Died This Year

Fri 12/21 @ 2PM

This is a time of year to be especially grateful to have a warm, safe place to live — because so many don’t. Not only does the ubiquitous holiday cheer pass them by, but they’re often sleeping in an alley or under a bridge in an attempt to evade the biting Lake Erie winds.

The Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless (NEOCH) has been working on behalf of Cleveland’s homeless population for thirty years, including advocating for improved shelter standards and more accessible housing, providing essential supplies and protecting the right of homeless people to vote.

Another of its programs is its annual Homeless Memorial Service/candlelight vigil, which aims to dignify and humanize those who have died in the preceding year, as well as honor people who passed away who were friends to the homeless. Activists, homeless service providers, and homeless individuals themselves will gather at the West Side Catholic Center at 3135 Lorain Road in Ohio City to read the names, pray and draw attention to the needs and challenges of this population. Councilman Basheer Jones will offer brief remarks. All are welcome.
