The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s touring production Rosa Parks tells the story of one of the legendary figures in civil rights history. Parks’ action in refusing to give up her bus seat so that white passengers could sit was the immediate trigger for the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott, one of the seminal events of the Civil Rights Movement.
While the theater’s publicity says, “Little did she know that this simple act would significantly change the course of our nation,” Parks was not all that innocent about the meaning of her action. Then 42, she had been an activist for more than a decade, and as an officer of the local NAACP, fought against the injustices and inequality she had observed since she was a child. She was chosen as the catalyst because of her perception as an upstanding citizen. But the boycott brought to prominence a young minister who had recently moved to Montgomery, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Parks’ life was adapted for the stage and for family audiences by Deondra Kamau Means of the Cincinnati Childres’s Theatre.
