CAN Journal Benefit Honors Women in the Arts

Sat 9/21 @ 6-11PM

A while back, Michael Gill, editor/publisher of the quarterly Cleveland visual arts magazine CAN Journal, had a realization. With the exception of a few big museums, every significant arts organization in town was headed by a woman.

That provided the theme for this year’s fundraiser for the nonprofit CAN, celebrating women in the arts. In particular, the event will celebrate Jennifer Coleman, the Gund Foundation’s senior program officer for the arts, and ceramics artist Kristen Cliffel, who uses a medium often deployed for crafts to make striking, complex statements about how women are viewed in our society.

The evening will start on the new rooftop sculpture garden at Worthington Yards, with food and drinks provided by the Flying Fig’s Karen Small, one of the few women in the upper echelons of Cleveland cuisine, an area with a very different gender dynamic than the arts. There’ll be an open bar and great views of the lake at sunset.

Afterward, in the building’s beautifully rehabbed courtyard at the general admission segment of the event, there’ll be more food and drinks, a dance party with music by DJ Nic Nacc, and projections by Cleveland-based artist multimedia artist Kasumi. There’ll also be scheduled tours of the rooftop sculpture garden for GA ticketholders.

VIP is $175, general admission is $35, or $50 with valet parking which you will probably want in the warehouse district on a Saturday night.
