Flaming River Con Offers ’Zines, Comics, Panels & Podcasts for LGBTQ Community

Sat 9/21 @ 10AM-6PM

There are so many specialized comic cons now that you can find something focused on every taste, whether it’s horror, superheroes, women or local artists.

The Flaming River Con, taking place at the Cleveland Public Library’s Louis Stokes Wing downtown, focuses on the intersection of LGBTQ and geek culture, with vendors from the LGBTQ community, offering art, comics, ’zines and books. Throughout the day there will also be podcasts, panels and workshops on a vast range of topics, including Afrofuturism, masculinity in comic media, basic figure drawing, working with crystals (Did they wander in from a new age convention?), and a name change clinic for trans people. Don’t miss the “Shameless Self-Promotion Superpowers” session with Baldwin-Wallace professor/podcast host/comedian/author/burlesque emcee Ken Schneck. He knows whereof he talks!

And it’s family-friendly, but please don’t tell your local Republican politician! He’ll faint when he hears there’s a Drag Queen Story Time.

It’s free, but there’s a suggested donation of $7. More if you’re feeling generous: it funds year-round low-cost programming accessible to all.

There’s also an afterparty at Side Quest in Lakewood at 8pm, if you want to continue a conversation you started at the Con, mingle with panelists, enjoy special themed cocktails and maybe get your book or ’zine signed.
