The 50-year celebration of the most famous Cuyahoga River fire encompasses a variety of events and focuses. Portland, Oregon-based author Kristen Ohlson has written extensively on environmental issues. Her 2014 book The Soil Will Save Us looks at the poor farming and ranching practices that have negatively impacted the Earth over thousands of years, and gotten worse with modern corporate factory farming. In it, she explores how the massive loss of carbon from the soil can be reversed and in doing s help reverse global warming.
She’ll speak at Case Western Reserve University’s Tinkham Veale center in a program that also includes the short film Carbon Nation by UNiversity of Arizone professor Peter Byck, and a panel discussion moderated by Peter Bode on the West Creek Conservancy and featuring Justin Husher and the Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District, urban farmer Steve Larson and Nathan Lutz of boutique composting business Rust Belt Riders.
