Hear from Experts Why Bees Matter on World Bee Day

Thu 5/20 @ noon-4:30PM

The United Nations has declared May 20 to be World Bee Day, emphasizing how critical these pollinators are to the global food supply, how they’re being threatened and what we can do to protect them. This is the fourth year the day is being honored.

Want to learn more? Join a group of bee experts for an online discussion shedding light on the importance of these insects to our gardens. Those who attended last year’s Kurentovanje Festival (one of the few Cleveland events to make it under the wire before the pandemic) won’t be surprised to see the majority of the speakers are Slovenian — the prominence of Slovenia in beekeeping was the event’s theme and World Bee Day was founded by Slovenians.

Among the speakers are Bostjan Noc, president of the Slovenian Beekeepers Association and founder of World Bee Day; Ariana Ferfila, director of the Slovenian Beekeeping Academy; Dr. Petra Bole, director of the Radovljica (Slovenia) Beekeeping Museum; and Dr Peter Kozmus, vice president of the World Beekeepers Association. Non-Slovenian participants includeJoan Gunter, president of the American Beekeeping Federation, and Dr. Reed M. Johnson, association professor of entomology at The Ohio State University. The moderator is Peggy Garnes, president of the Ohio State Beekeepers Association.

Registration is $25, which will go to providing a Honey Breakfast for K-12 students in Parma and Cleveland on November 19. Go here to register.
