African-American Cultural Garden Celebrates Juneteenth

Sat 6/15 @ noon-4PM

Juneteenth may be a new name to white people still trying to learn about Kwanzaa but to African-Americans it’s Independence Day. The day, June 19th, was chosen because it’s the day that in 1865, Texas finally abolished slavery, two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

There was an event longer delay in creating the African-American Cultural Garden in Rockefeller Park. It was authorized in 1977, but dedicated (finally!) in 2016 and has been slowly unfolding since then. Now it’s ready for celebrations such as its Juneteenth event. It will feature food, art and jewelry vendors, live music and a children’s village with free books for kids.

It’s free.
