Last month, we told you all about how Steve Popovich Jr. is reactivating the Cleveland International record label, which his father Steve Popovich created to release Meat Loaf’s debut album, Bat Out of Hell. Popovich and his team worked the record, which had been rejected by every major label, out of a house in Willoughby Hills until it became a platinum smash — and one of the best selling records of all time.

The senior Popovich died in 2011, leaving behind a mess of lawsuits over the album, which his son recently settled, leaving him free to re-launch, reissue the old records and sign new talent. He’s just announced his first signing, which, as he promised, is very much in the spirit of what his father was passionate about: blue-collar heartland rock. The Cerny Brothers, originally from downstate Illinois and now living in Nashville, make music redolent with influences such as Bruce Springsteen and John Mellancamp.

Steve Jr. will be back in Cleveland (he’s also based in Nashville) for Cleveland International Day at the Rock Hall, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the recording of Ian Hunter’s “Cleveland Rocks,” which was released on Cleveland International. At 1pm in the Foster Theater he’ll host a listening party for the reissue of the Cleveland International Records – Cleveland Rocks CD compilation, which contains the song. Visitors can also stop in the Cleveland exhibit and see the piano on which Hunter wrote the song. In addition, all day the Rock Hall will be running the three-hour film of the 1995 concert held in the old Lakefront Stadium to mark the Rock Hall’s opening.

It’s free with regular admission.
