Cain Park Presents Musical “Ragtime,” an Epic Cross-Cultural Tale of the Early 20th Century

Thu 6/13-Sun 6/30

E.L. Doctorow’s 1975 novel Ragtime is a complicated story set in the first decade of the 20th century. It involves of a wealthy family who made a fortune in fireworks, a black family caught up in racism and violence, and an Eastern European immigrant family living in the NYC tenements, whose lives intersect with each other and with real historical figures and events.

Somehow this complex story was made into a 1981 film and a 1996 stage musical that ran on Broadway from 1998-2000. The cultural diversity of the story allowed composer Stephen Flaherty to draw on period-appropriate sources including ragtime, klezmer, waltzes, brass-band marches and pop tunes.

Cain Park will perform this epic story, with Joanna May Cullinan directing the cast of nearly 30 performers. The show runs Thursdays through Saturdays @ 7pm and Sundays @ 2pm in the Alma Theater through Sun 6/30. Tickets are $32 in advcance, $34 day of performance.
