Currently, America is reaping the rotten fruit of a country controlled on all levels by a powerful minority. We’ve just seen a blatantly unfit, radically partisan, openly misogynist perjurer opposed by most Americans confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Our Congress and our White House are in the hands of a party that did not receive the majority vote.
Why has this happened? Over the past few decades — and growing worse since the turn of the century — that minority party has contrived to rig our elections, not by some kind of high-tech hacking and changing votes — that’s left-wing conspiracy theory — but by the three-legged stool of voter suppression, gerrymandering and dark money.
There’s a documentary film making the rounds about the latter, called simply Dark Money. It explores how elections have come to be dominated by huge floods of often untraceable donations and ad campaigns, most negative attacks that fuel voter cynicism and depress turnout. That money flood was exacerbated by two U.S. Supreme Court decisions: Citizens United in 2010 and McCutcheon in 2014.
Learn more about this distressing situation when West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church in Rocky River hosts a free screening of the film. It will be followed by refreshments and discussion which, if you know Unitarians, it will be lively! And if you know Unitarians, you know all are welcome.
