Experimental Jazz Quintet Teiku Explores Traditional Ukrainian Jewish Music at Ohio City House Concert

Thu 3/28 @ 7:30PM

Ohio City residents Joel Elvery & Lynn Phares periodically host concerts in their room under the rubric of Mechanic Street House Concerts. They’ve included folk, Americana, indie rock, alt country and singer-songwriters — they book artists they love and want to share, and their tastes are eclectic.

Their next event features a quintet of jazz musicians called Teiku, centering around Chicago pianist/composer (and Oberlin alum) Josh Harlow and Detroit-based drummer Jonathan Taylor. Both of Ukrainian-Jewish ancestry, they describe the band as attempting to reframe those ancient melodies which they grew up hearing at family seders. And in Teiku, which means “unanswered question,” the improvising musicians are in a constant state of exploring musical questions which may not have definitive answers.

They’re joined in the band by Michigan-based musicians woodwinds player Peter Formanek and bassist Will McEvoy, and cellist Aliyah Ultan, an Oberlin undergraduate.

The requested donation is a little different than usual; it’s a $10-$20 sliding scale, and only $5 for students at the door. As usual, email team@mechanicstreetmusic.com to reserve a spot and they will give you the exact location. They provide munchies; you’re free to bring a beverage.
