Two Morgan Conservatory Artists-in-Residence Talk About Their Work

Thu 9/26 @ 7PM

The Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory currently has two artists-in-residence who come there from very different places geographically. Winsome Jobling comes from the city of Darwin in Australia’s isolated Northern Territory; Christi Birchfield is a Clevelander whose work is well known to art lovers here (she formerly ran Zygote Press’s Ink House in North Collinwood); she’s currently living in Seattle.

Both of them will participate in an artist talk at the Morgan, discussing their influences, inspirations, techniques, and what they’re experimenting with during their stay. Those who recall Birchfield’s elegant floral prints may recoil — or be intrigued — by her current fascination with death, decay, and rebirth. Jobling has been making paper from dozens of local plant varieties in Darwin for three decades, learning all of its properties and what can be done with it. She says “Paper is always a tangible expression of my environment.”

The evening includes pizza, beverages and “food for thought.” It’s free and open the public.
