It’s summer so it must be time for some outdoor Shakespeare again.
The nomadic Cleveland Shakespeare Festival opens the first of its two summer offerings this week when it performs the relatively obscure tragedy Troilus and Cressida. Based on Greek epic Iliad, it takes place during the Trojan War and offers a complicated weaving of two stories including the romance of the title characters and another about battle combatants. Since the CSF abridges all its productions in order to perform in daylight in its outdoor settings, it will be interesting to see what parts of these stories they emphasize.
This weekend it will perform at the PEACE Park in Cleveland Heights’ Coventry Village on Fri 6/15, Lakewood Park on Sat 6/16 and Bedford Public Square on Sun 6/17. It will be at other locations around northeast Ohio on the subsequent two weekends for a total of nine performances. All are free.
Its second show, Twelfth Night, debuts on Fri 7/20.
