Akron’s Box Gallery Opens Two Shows about Identity and Environment by Member Artists

Fri 1/11 @ 5-8PM

The BOX Gallery, on the third floor of Akron’s Summit Artspace, is an artist-run space, a project of Artists of Rubber City (AoRC), a visual arts nonprofit founded in 1978. Its opening show of 2019 features the work of two of its members who work in very different media, although both explore their environment in monochromatic work.

Commercial and fine art photographer Bradley Hart offers supra, exploring the abstract effects of time and the environment in black and white photography. He says, “The deconstruction of chemical bonds as those two forces take their natural course remind us all that the natural order of existence is entropy: decline, failure and decay. There is beauty in the spaces between these points, though — for those who choose to see it.”

Kent State University professor Davin Ebanks’ exhibit Human Nomenclature [Looting a Bazaar for Your Own Portrait] comprises both sculptures and prints that look at how identity and environment impact each other. “I see my sculptures as metaphors for the subjective nature of identity and history,” he says. “I work with some of the elements that form my personal and cultural identity: water, pattern-work, blackness and self-portraits.”

Meet the artists at the show’s opening reception Fri 1/11 @ 5-8pm. The gallery is also open Friday and Saturday @ noon-5pm, 3rd Thursdays (1/17@ 4-7PM), and the Akron Artwalk Sat 1/2 @ 5-9pm.
