Kent State University’s Stark campus has a couple of programs marking Black History month, one educational and the other musical.
On Thu 2/21 Cleveland-based blues harmonica player Wallace Coleman, who gigged with both Robert Lockwood J. and Cleveland Fats’ bands and has fronted his own band since 1996, will perform with his electric band at the Main Hall Auditorium. It’s free and open to the public; no tickets are required.
On Tue 2/26 professor, author and civil rights activist Mary Frances Berry speaks at the campus Conference Center as part of its Featured Speakers series. The now-81-year-old left academia to serve in President Carter’s administration and was eventually appointed to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission by him. When Reagan tried to oust her, she successfully sued and remained on the commission; in 1993, President Clinton appointed her chair and reappointed her for another term in 1999. She’s published around a dozen books, with an emphasis on racial and women’s issues, including her most recent History Teaches Us to Resist: How Progressive Movements Have Succeeded in Challenging Times.
The lecture is free and open to the public but tickets are required with a two-ticket-per-person limit.
