Local Museums Offer Family Fun on MLK Day

Mon 1/21

It won’t be hard to find things to do around town with the kids when they’re out of school for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. Museums are offering not only free admission, but a wealth of special programming.

That includes many museums not normally open on Monday, such as the Akron Art Museum. From 1-4pm, there will be a guided tour of the soon-to-close Jeff Donaldson: Dig exhibit, a career-length retrospective of the work of this artist who was one of the founders of Chicago’s AfriCOBRA movement, intended to celebrate African-American culture, and who devoted his life to expressing black pride and encouraging it in his students. There will also be a tour of work by other black artists in the collection, along with hands-on art-making and other participatory activities. It’s open to all children and their accompanying adults.

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History IS regularly open on Mondays, but it’s offering special programming and free admission for MLK Day from 10am-4pm for all for what it’s calling Discovery Day. Curators will come out of their cubbyholes and be on the museum floor with specimens not normally on display. Scientists and students from Case Western Reserve University and University of Chicago will be doing demonstrations and mini-Shafran Planetarium shows will be only $1. Best of all there will be live animal presentations devoted to Cleveland wildlife, Like that raccoon that knocked over the garbage can and strewed trash all over your yard.
