Ben Franklin Community Garden in Old Brooklyn is a sprawling space behind the Ben Frankin Elementary School that comprises a community of growers from kids to seniors and promotes sustainable growing practices, with nearly 200 growers each year.
The property includes a lot of different spaces, with individual and group plots, a demonstration garden, bee hives, flower gardens, trees and more. It also has a small covered pavilion in a grove, where, throughout the summer, it hosts free community concerts as part of their Music in the Garden series. And they attract some serious local talent — not just somebody’s cousin who plays James Taylor covers on acoustic guitar.
For instance, this weekend, they’re hosting one of the most distinctive area bands. Alla Boara features some top local musicians, playing music based on obscure Italian folk music, and adding their own jazz and pop twists to it. It may sound a bit arcane, but in reality, the music is accessible, lively and engaging — and the band offers background to the songs so you can get an idea of what they’re about.
The concerts are free. Bring your own folding lawn chair and enjoy music outside with the scent of growing things wafting on the breeze. Here’s a schedule of upcoming concerts which take place on alternate Saturdays.
