Art Museum’s MIX Party Recreates “The Great Gatsby” Era

Fri 8/1 @ 6-10PM

The Cleveland Museum of Art’s monthly MIX party is one of its best-drawing events. Be warned that traffic backs up on MLK Boulevard!

This month’s them is Gatsby, taking its cue from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous 1925 novel The Great Gatsby, honoring its centennial. The novel was famously a dissection of the dark, seamy side of the lives of New York’s wealthy hard-partying young socialites.

Still, some choose to ignore that side of the story and revel in the celebratory aspects of the cutting loose of post-World War I culture. This event invites guests to come in “jazz age” attire, which was showcased in a 2017 CMA exhibit,American Style in the 1920s. So get that flapper Halloween costume out!

Music for dancing will be provided by DJ Lo and local swing/jazz/jump blues ensemble Red Light Roxy, whose music in more reflective of the 1930s and 1940s, but who’s keeping score anyway? Viva Dance Studio will be providing a short swing dance, which had its roots in the 1920s (Charleston!) but is mostly known from its ’30s and ’40s versions. Best of all, Cleveland Burlesque will be there sporting Gatsby-era fashion, and you know they’ll bring the sparkle and sizzle, as they prepare for the Ohio Burlesque Festival at the Beachland August 7-9.

There will be Gatsby-themed food and drink available for purchase, and the galleries will be open. It’s a 21+ event. Get tickets here.
