During its annual Veterans’ Mental Health Fair, the Cuyahoga County Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Monument will be dedicating a statue of Harvey the Dog, who served as the mascot to the 104th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Although Harvey’s caretaker was Captain Daniel M. Stearns of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry, who was suffering from what’s now presumed to be PTSD, and it’s said that only being with Harbvey relieved his condition.
This story inspired the Mental Health Fair, where a copy of Janel Maher’s statue of Harvey will be installed on Public Square. All are invited to come down for the dedication, including service dogs, therapy dogs, emotional support dogs, and just plain pet dogs, and their humans. It’s free. Get more info about the Mental Health Fair, which takes place on Public Square from 10am-2pm, and the Harvey statue dedication here.
