For a small city, Akron has produced a prodigious amount of interesting music. Many people know about DEVO and the Black Keys who went on to much bigger success. But there’s a whole arm of intriguing artists behind them — from one-hit wonders such as Rachel Sweet and the Waitresses, to punk-fueled artists such as the Rubber City Rebels, to the glam-punk Bizarros, New Wave darlings Unit 5, and artists who were too distinctive to pigeonhole such as Tin Huey and Chi-Pig. And that’s only scratching the surface.
Want to learn more about this fertile scene? Come to the downtown Akron-Summit County Public Library Tuesday May 20 for “From Akron & Beyond: The History of the Akron Sound.” Summit FM program director Brad Savage will moderate a talent-packed panel including Tin Huey/Waitresses member Chris Butler, Unit 5 vocalist Tracey Thomas, Bizarros vocalist (and founder of Akron-based Clone Records) Nick Nicholis, writer and author of the Devo biography David Giffels, Akron punk historian Jimi Imij, Devo cofounder Bob Lewis, and Calvin C. Rydbom, author of The Akron Sound.
It’s free and open to all.
