Currently on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Mark Schwartz and Bettina Katz Photography Galleries is a show called Picturing the Border. It features photos taken along the U.S./Mexican border from the 1970s until now, showing what the border — and the lives of the people who live near there — are like. The show is on view until January 5, 2025.
So it’s an appropriate time to be welcoming Mexican-American jazz vocalist/songwriter and educator Magos Herrera to the museum’s newly reopened Gartner Auditorium. In her music Herrera combines jazz elements such as scat singing with Latin American melodies and rhythms. She’s released 11 albums, most recently 2023’s Aire, and in addition to teaching at the Mannes School of Music at the New School in New York City where she’s based, she’s an advocate for gender equality and against violence against women.
At CMA, she’ll perform with her quarter which also includes guitarist Vinicius Gomes, bassist Matt Penman and drummer Alex Kautz. Get tickets here.
