Porthouse Theatre Opens Season with 1962 Farce with Sondheim Music & Lyrics

Fri 6/9-Sat 6/24

“Something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone, a comedy tonight …”

So starts the opening number of the 1962 Broadway musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, based on a play by ancient Roman playwright Plautus, known for his farces. That song, along with all the music and lyrics, was one of Stephen Sondheim’s (very atypical) early efforts. Although the play won six Tonys, Sondheim, not yet tapped for greatness, didn’t even earn a nomination.

The play will kick off the season at the summertime Porthouse Theatre, located on the grounds of Blossom Music Center. It will be led by the heavy-hitting team of director Terri Kent who is the producing artistic director of Porthouse Theatre, choreographer Martin Cespedes and music irector Jennifer Korecki.

It opens Friday June 9 and runs through Sat June 24. Go here for info and tickets.
