Judge in the Murdaugh Murder Trial, a CSU Grad, Speaks at His Alma Mater

Tue 3/28 @ noon

For those enthralled with true crime stories — one of the most popular podcast and social media topics — the story of the downfall of South Carolina’s powerful Murdaugh family, which just ended with the conviction of attorney Alex Murdaugh for the murder of his wife and son, has been a feast.

Surprisingly, there’s a northeast Ohio connection. Judge Clifton Newman, who presided over Alex Murdaugh’s trial, is from South Carolina, but earned his degrees from Cleveland State University where he met his wife, was president of the student government and began his legal practice before returning to South Carolina to continue his private practice. He was elected by the state legislature to serve as a circuit court judge in 2000 and appointed by the Chief Justice of the SC Supreme Court to handle the Murdaugh case, which involved a family which had ruled over their county for a century.

Judge Newman, who will be inducted into the CSU Law School Hall of Fame in November, will be speaking at his alma mater in the Moot Court Room on Tuesday March 28. The event is free and open to the public.
