Cleveland Ensemble Alla Boara Shares Italian Folk Culture in Story and Song

Fri 3/24 @ Sat 3/25 @ 8PM

Alla Boara is a relatively new band in northeast Ohio, formed by busy local drummer Anthony Taddao just a couple of years ago.

There’s nothing else quite like them in the area music scene. They use Alan Lomax’s 1954 Smithsonian Folkways field recordings of nearly extinct traditional Italian folk tunes as their baseline, including regional tunes mostly unknown today, describing them as “folk lullabies, laments, hymns and festival songs [that] are variously surprising, playful, mournful, tender and bewitching.” And they give the music a contemporary twist, drawing on jazz, rock and world music.

The lineup includes some of the area’s top local jazz, pop and classical musicians, including vocalist Amanda Powell (known for her work with baroque chamber ensemble Apollo’s Fire), guitarist Dan Bruce, trumpet player Tommy Lehman, bassist Ian Kinnamon, and accordionist/keyboard player Clay Colley. And last year they released their long-promised debut album, titled Le Tre Sorelle.

The ensemble will be bringing a multimedia performance called “Ancient Roots” to the Stocker Arts Center’s Cirigliano Studio Theatre at Lorain County Community College for two nights. Get tickets here.
