Two Akron Soul Train Shows Look at Personal Histories in Diverse Media

“An Hour Glass at Water’s Edge” by Orlando Caraballo

Fri 1/27 @ 5:30PM

Akron Soul Train’s Gallery opens shows by a pair of its artists in residence this week: Cleveland assemblage/fiber artist Jennifer Whitten and Cleveland multi-media artist Orlando Caraballo.

Whitten’s show, in the main gallery, dubbed Intricacies, “embodies Talismans, Charms, and Powerful Objects,” they tell us. She’s inspired by the beading and stitching techniques used in aboriginal art, the minkisi carved wooden figures of West Central Africa, and the sequined Haitian Voodoo flags depicting their pantheon of deities.

Caraballo’s work, on view in the CapSoul Gallery under the title Capicú, draws on his own background as a Puerto Rican Clevelander who graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art, and his family history to create works using photography, printmaking, drawing and installation to tell a story of “love, death, grief, time, and acceptance” that spans generations.

Both shows open this week with a free, public reception on Friday January 27, and will be on view through March 4.
