Modern Warrior Live Tells Veterans’ Story in Music and Narration

Thu 11/17 @ 7PM

Jazz trumpeter Dominick Farinacci, a Cleveland native, has traveled a long way since he was part of the Tri-C high school jazz program where he met Wynton Marsalis who recommended him to be part of the Juilliard School’s first Jazz Studies class.

Now based in New York, he’s always working on new collaborations, new projects, new musical ideas. But he’s frequently back in Cleveland, sharing his knowledge, his experience and his latest projects.

Five years ago, he collaborated with Staff Sergeant Jaymes Poling, a Warren, Ohio, veteran on a project called Modern Warrior. It draws from Poling’s experiences during his three tours of duty in Afghanistan and his return to civilian life to explore the cost of war and the challenge of transitioning from one life to another. It explores difficult issues such as mental health and addiction. The goal of the Modern Warrior initiative is to connect civilians and veterans and promote understanding between the two via live performances, workshops, informative panel discussions and sharing veteran stories.

Since they created the work, it’s been performed at Playhouse Square, the Library of Congress, Amazon Headquarters, the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, and the National Association of Drug Court Professionals, among more than 125 other places, achieving its goal.

It will be performed again this week at the Mandel Theatre on Tri-C’s Eastern Campus. The 80-minute performance, which starts at 7pm, will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A at 8:30. General admission is $25; veterans and active-duty military can get four fee tickets with valid ID. Tri-C students with valid ID can get two tickets each. Go here for more information and tickets.
