City Club Forum Looks at What “Success” Means to a City Like Cleveland

Tue 12/6  @11:30AM

“The definition of success in economic growth for small-to-mid-sized cities has been dominated by its ability to attract more jobs, bring in new business, and grow population,” says the City Club’s promotion for its upcoming forum “Redefining Success for Midwestern Cities.” “This perception incentivizes those in economic development to chase the next ‘big thing,’ rather than focus on strategies that benefit the people already working and living in the region.”

So we hear a lot of talk about attracting new corporate headquarters and large projects, usually with generous tax incentives. Meanwhile, Cleveland finds itself rated the poorest big city in America and the worst city for Black women — hardly a definition of “success.” And it continues to shrink. How do you reverse this, especially in a state where democracy is on life support and human rights are under attack?

The forum will feature panelists Bradford Davy, the city of Cleveland’s chief strategy officer; Jessie Grogan, Associate Director of Reduced Poverty and Spatial Inequality at the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy; and James J. Hardy, senior program officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which focuses on health improvement issues. Tania Menesse, CEO/President of Cleveland Neighborhood Progress, moderates

The livestream starts at noon. If you have questions, you can tweet them to  @TheCityClub or text 330-541-5794.
