Charming But Dated Music Is Topic of The Musical Theater Project’s Movies at Home

Thu 10/6 @ 7PM

You can’t say you weren’t warned about the next selection for The Musical Theater Project’s Movies at Home series. TMTP artistic director and host for the series Bill Rudman says, “It’s a classic, all right, but you’ll have to get through a layer of sexism before you love it as much as I do!”

Well, it WAS a different time. The 1954 MGM film Seven Brides for Seven Brothers came out at a time when society was telling women that their ONLY goal should be snagging a husband — any husband, any way they could. And it’s set in the rural west of 1850 when a man had to get a woman any way he could to help with the heavy load of day-to-day living without modern conveniences.

Howard Keel and Jane Powell star as the main couple who then get involved with Keel’s character’s six brothers kidnapping six of Powell’s girlfriend to marry them. Ugh. But Rudman promises us that the Stanley Donen-directed Michael Kidd-choreographed film has some great song-and-dance numbers, with a score by Johnny Mercer and Gene de Paul.

Want to risk it? As usual, Rudman has posted an intro for you to watch first, before you go online to buy or rent the film (It’s available at Amazon Prime,Vudu, Apple TV+, Google Play and YouTube.)

Then join him on Zoom here on Thursday October 6 @ 7pm to talk about what you thought of it. It’s free and all are welcome.
