Local Folk/Americana Band Hey Mavis Headlines Riverdog Barn

Sat 9/24 @ 7:30PM

In 2020, when very few touring bands were on the road, Lorain County’s Riverdog Barn filled its schedule (in its socially distanced outdoor meadow) with local artists who performed music in the genres its fans like: folk, roots, blues, bluegrass, Americana, alt country.

Now that it’s got a full schedule of touring bands, it isn’t neglecting the NE Ohio artists who got them through the pandemic. This weekend, for instance, the headliner is Hey Mavis, an outstanding folk/Americana quartet from the Akron area.

Together for nearly a dozen years, the band features the husband-and-wife team of Laurie and Ed Caner, she responsible for vocals, songwriting and banjo, he contributing his virtuoso violin skills. They’re supported by the rhythm section of bassist Bryan Thomas and drummer Anthony Taddeo.

Laurie and Ed formed the band during a residency at Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Since then, they’ve released three albums and developed a reputation as one of Northeast Ohio’s finest roots music bands with their free-ranging take on roots music, weaving blues, jazz, folk and country strands into Laurie’s graceful songs. In 2018, she released Silver Ribbon Dream — Songs and Stories of the Ohio & Erie Canal, a book/CD that pays tribute to the Ohio landscape, backed by Hey Mavis.
