Democratic Candidate for Governor Speaks at the City Club

Wed 8/17 @ 11:30AM

Nan Whaley was mayor of the city of Dayton from 2013-2022, after serving on the Dayton City Commission and the Montgomery County Board of Elections. During her terms in office, she confronted a series of crises including a mass shooting that kill 10 and injured 27, and a destructive tornado and got high marks for her handling of these events. In addition, under her leadership Dayton became the first Ohio city to off paid family leave for municipal employees and make high-quality preschool available to all 3- and 4-year-olds.

Whaley mounted a run for governor in 2018 but dropped out after Richard Cordray jumped in the race for a run that resulted in a narrow (less than four points) loss to Mike DeWine.

Now Whaley is the official Democratic candidate to take on DeWine, as he goes for another term. But in the past four years, DeWine hasn’t covered himself with glory. He started out strong when the pandemic hit but caved to the extremists in his party when they attacked safety measures; led the charge to strip women of their reproductive rights; and backed down on his promise to “do something” following the Dayton shootings and instead went along meekly with the legislature’s expansion of guns into every corner of Ohio life.

Whaley is not only the first woman to run for governor of Ohio on a major party ticket, but she boldly chose another woman as her running mate: Cuyahoga County council woman Cheryl Stephens.

Learn more about her when she delivers remarks at the City Cub of Cleveland. The livestream starts at noon. If you have questions, tweet @TheCityClub or text 330-541-5794.
