Cain Park Production Spotlights Legendary Broadway Composer Stephen Sondheim

Thu 8/4-Sun 8/14

It’s hard to think of Broadway musical theater without thinking of Stephen Sondheim, who passed away last year at the age of 91. His career began in the 1950s with West Side Story and Gypsy, and continued through a diverse array of often dark or morose productions including Follies, Company, A Little Night Music, Into the Woods, and the very morbid Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. A list of all the songs he wrote would be virtually endless. Probably his best known was “Send in the Clowns” from 1973’s A Little Night Music; Judy Collins, Frank Sinatra and Barbara Streisand are among the most prominent of the multitude who recorded it.

Needless to say, there was more than enough material to create Sondheim on Sondheim, a revue, which debuted on Broadway in 2010. That review will have its regional premiere at Cain Park this month. In addition to two dozen songs, it includes interview footage, which gives audiences a glimpse of his creative process and personal life.

The Cain Park production features a dozen noted local performers including seven Actors Equity artists or candidates. Joanna May Cullinan directs the show, which opens Thursday August 4 and runs through Sunday August 14, Thursdays-Saturdays @ 7pm and Sunday @ 2pm
