Artists Rejected by CAN Triennial Organize Their Own Show at Doubting Thomas

Fri 8/12 @ 6-10PM

Any time there’s a juried art some artists who submit are inevitably left out, not necessarily because they’re not good artists but because they don’t fit the slant of the show or the jurors’ tastes. Some whine and sulk while others go our and organize their own show — a long and venerable tradition. These “salon des refuses” fate back to the 1860s when conservative French jurors, who favored specific academic-style paintings, rejected the work of the Impressionists.

The CAN Triennial was organized by the local visual arts quarterly CAN Journal as a companion to the FRONT Triennial, intended to showcase the local visual arts scene alongside FRONT’s international artists. And while it selected some fine artists it couldn’t include everyone.

So a handful of intrepid artists organized the Yes We CAN Too show at Doubting Thomas Gallery in Tremont during the fist CAN Triennial in 2018. And they’re doing it again. Calling themselves “The 4 Js and the Deejay it includes wrk by Joan of Art, June Hund, John Saile, James Jenkins and Dr. Theresa Boyd.

The exhibit not only features new work by these artists, they also used recyclable cardboard CANs as a base for their art, elevating their use of puns to a very high level. “Some artists will eventually hand the ‘CANS’ over to organizations that will in turn collect for charitable endeavors,” they add.

The show opens on Friday August 12 @ 6-10pm during Walkabout Tremont (make it your last stop; parties run late here) with many local artists present and DeeJay Wednesday spinning music. There’ll also be cake and a donation bar. The show will also be open on weekends @ 1-4pm through September 3.
