Ohio Shakespeare Festival Tackles “The Taming of the Shrew”

Thu 7/7-Sun 8/14

Shakespeare’s romantic comedy The Taming of the Shrew is a hard play to do these days. Theater ensembles have tried to mitigate or upend its central theme of a headstrong “uppity” woman put in her place by her suitor who, after she initially resents him, “puts her in her place” and teaches her to be meek and docile. But this is one place where interesting, updated reinterpretations seem to sabotage the essential nature of the play.

Now the Akron-based Ohio Shakespeare Festival is giving it a go. We’re told “This particular production will challenge and enlighten traditional ideas of gender with nontraditional casting.” So we’ll have a chance to see if they can come up with an angle that works.

They’re performing the play outdoors on the beautiful ground of Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens Thursdays through Sundays through Sunday August 14. Gates open at 6 for picnicking, and the greenshow — an Elizabethan-era tradition of a short pre-play entertainment — starts at 7:30pm. Get tickets here.
