Cleveland Shakespeare Festival Takes on Moliere Satire

Fri 7/22-Sun 8/7 @ 7PM

For its second and final show of the 2022 season, the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival eschews Shakespeare entirely in favor of a work by the French playwright Moliere written in 1672, more than a century after Shakespeare’s birth. But it continues its tradition of offering a serious play and a lighter one each season.

The Learned Ladies is a typical Moliere comedy (and one of his most popular plays): a satire skewering the pretensions of people who consider themselves highly educated. Complications ensue as a young woman’s choice of suitor is nixed by her family who prefer a pompous poet/scholar.

As usual, the company performs the show for free at various outdoor locations around the area Friday through Sunday. They open at Coventry Village’s P.E.A.C.E. Party Friday July 22, move over to Lakewood Park in Lakewood on Saturday July 23 and wind up the weekend at Coe Lake Park in Berea on Sunday July 24
